Global Research Trends in Cultured Meat and Halal Biotechnology: a Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract
Biotechnology has rapidly emerged as a key driver of innovation in the food and industrial sectors, emphasizing efficiency, sustainability, and halal compliance. However, research addressing halal biotechnology remains limited and fragmented. This study aims to analyze research trends in cultured meat, cellular agriculture, and halal biotechnology with a particular focus on halal enzyme production and cultured meat, using a bibliometric approach. Data were collected from the Scopus database using the keywords (“halal biotechnology” OR “halal enzyme” OR “cultured meat” OR “lab-grown meat” OR “cellular agriculture”) within the article title field, covering publications from 2020 to 2025. The data were analyzed using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny to map publication growth, author collaboration, institutional affiliations, and keyword co-occurrences. A total of 987 documents were identified, showing fluctuating yet steadily increasing trends over the years. The literature is heavily dominated by cultured meat research, whereas halal biotechnology remains underrepresented, forming the central node in the cultured meat and cellular agriculture research network. Conversely, the keyword “halal” appeared only 11 times, mostly related to halal enzymes, halal awareness, and halal ingredients, indicating limited integration of halal perspectives in current biotechnology research. China, the United States, and South Korea emerged as the most productive countries, while Nanjing Agricultural University, Jiangnan University, and Chung-Ang University were identified as the top contributing institutions. These findings highlight a significant research gap in halal biotechnology, underscoring the need for greater scientific exploration of halal enzymes and halal-certified cultured meat production.
